Foot & Ankle Fractures Q & A

What are foot and ankle fractures?

Foot and ankle fractures are breaks in the bones in your foot or ankle. There are many types of fractures, and the team at Trinity Foot & Ankle Specialists specializes in treating:

Pilon fractures

A pilon fracture is a bone break that affects the bottom portion of the tibia (shin bone) at the ankle.

Ankle fractures

Ankle fractures include any breaks in the bones that make up the ankle joint.

Fibular fractures

Fibular fractures are breaks in the fibula in the lower leg.

Calcaneal fractures

Calcaneal fractures are breaks in the heel bone. This is one of the largest bones in your foot.

Talus fractures

The talus is the bone under the ankle joint that assists with ankle movement. Talus fractures are breaks in this bone.

Navicular fractures

Navicular fractures are breaks in the bones in the middle of the foot. These types of fractures are common in athletes.

Lisfranc fractures or dislocations

The Lisfranc is a joint in the middle of your foot. Lisfranc fractures are breaks in any of the long bones that connect the ankle to the toes — metatarsals. Lisfranc dislocations occur when the joints pop out of place.

Metatarsal fractures

Metatarsal fractures are breaks in the long bones in the foot.

How are foot and ankle fractures diagnosed?

The Trinity Foot & Ankle Specialists team conducts comprehensive evaluations when you come in with concerns about foot and ankle fractures.

During your visit, your provider reviews your symptoms and the details of the injury. They examine the foot and ankle and take X-rays to determine fracture type and severity of the break.

How are foot and ankle fractures treated?

Treatment for your foot or ankle fracture may depend on the location and severity of your fracture. The team reviews the details of your injury and talks to you about your treatment options.

In some cases, the team may treat your fracture without surgery. Treatment might include:

  • Rest, ice, compression, and alleviation (RICE)
  • Pain-relieving medications
  • Activity modification
  • Casting, splinting, or rigid shoe
  • Buddy taping

When necessary, the team performs surgery to treat your fracture. The team has advanced training in open fractures, which break through the skin, and closed fractures, which don’t break through the skin, using open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) or external fixation.

With ORIF, the team places pins, screws, and plates directly in the bones under the skin to keep them in place for healing. With external fixation, the pins and screws hold the bones together outside the body.
